Where to save custom Windows 7 themes

There are different Windows 7 themes. First, there are themepack themes which use the extension .themepack and there are custom shell themes which usually have a folder and a .theme file.

Where To Save Windows 7 Themepack Themes

You do not need to save themepack themes anywhere special. Simply download the themes, double-click on them and you’re done – unless you are on Windows 7 Starter.

However, if you want to know where the themepack themes are saved, go to

  • C:\Users\(yourusername)\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Themes

Of course you need to unhide the AppData folder first. In that folder you’ll find all saved themepack themes, but since they are already applied you will only find .theme files and folders with the same name (which is important). If you are looking for the wallpapers, they are stored in the folders in a subfolder called DesktopBackground:

Where To Save Custom Windows 7 Themes

You need to save your custom Windows 7 themes in C:\Windows\Resources\Themes

Make sure that you do not have any nested folders when you save your themes there or the themes won’t work.
